TV Leech

“You think it’s another blanked town?” (Soldier 1)

“That or abandon. It’s weird though. This place still looks kind of lived in. Blanking always left a mess. Even when they just pick up and leave the place looks trashed. This one looks like everything was tidied up  before they left.” (Soldier 2)

“Are you two going to stand around gossiping all day.” The commander shouted from the corner. Their squad had been spending the last few hours sweeping the little town for survivors. The commander approached the two soldiers.

“Find anything, sir?” (Soldier 1)

“Nada,” he replied. “Just a couple more streets to check. I’m going to go radio in our status. I need you two to take Becker Avenue and 3rd Street. Report back to me when your done.”

“Yes sir.” (soldier 1 and 2)

Okay, I’ll admit it right here. I suck at righting solider-y dialog usually. So before I lose the idea while trying to muscle through it, I’m going to jot the general down and come back to this one a little later.

One of the soldiers mentions blanking. What this means is most if not all of a population within an effected area disappears. Various theories are floating around on the actual fate of those people, but the one with the most backing is that they are torn into another parallel universe like many of the creatures brought in by the Wave were into ours. It does usually leave quit a bit of debris. Cars crash when they lose their drives, broken objects that were held at the moment of the wave, etc…; not to mention the looting and vandalism from people traveling through and the general decay of abandon buildings afterward.

That is not what happened in this town however.  Instead electronic objects that have a high amount of human attention paid to them acted as a grounding for a “viral” creature sucked through during the Wave. This creature needs the energy created by attention to survive. It nested in a TV and spread throughout the town.

I am still working out how it infects each TV. Copied DVDs and such seem too The Ring; and going via cable and satellite would have drawn notice a lot sooner than I was planning this to occur. I may have to concede on the time-line thing and have the soldiers entering this town maybe 3-12 months after the Wave. Maybe playing with the amount of attention energy needed could stretch this out to fit in a middle ground.

One thing I have been playing with plot wise is to have the spread cut off by someone either blowing the power plant or cutting cable lines (maybe both) when they figure out what is going on. They would have been having a kind of gorilla war with the TV creature. Instead of going the have everyone feed off of turn into mindless controlled zombies route, I think instead they would just veg out. Maybe the one (or ones) not caught up by it have been trying to take care of those caught by bringing food and water, etc…

Okay idea caught(ish). Back to this later, got to run.
